We are thrilled to announce that our very own Khari Parrish has been recognized as the US Sailing Outstanding Program Director for his exceptional leadership, dedication, and impact on the sailing community. This prestigious award honors individuals who have demonstrated outstanding management and vision in running a sailing program, ensuring accessibility, inclusivity, and excellence.
As a graduate of Hampton University with a B.S. in Marine Biology and Environmental Science, Khari brings a unique blend of sailing expertise and STEM education to our organization. A four-year varsity sailor at Hampton—the only HBCU with a co-ed varsity sailing program—Khari has long been a champion of increasing diversity and youth engagement in sailing. His passion for mentoring young sailors and fostering a welcoming environment for participants of all backgrounds has made a lasting impact on our programs and the broader sailing community.
“I recall as though it was yesterday Khari – a kid fresh out of Hampton University the year before, Jacob, and I sitting at Rosedale for lunch on Friday, November 12, 2021. Finally, at 1:15, when they ran out of time and I ran dry on persuasion and cajolery, Khari brilliantly caved in and accepted our offer; Khari – a kid no longer – has been a pillar of the Sailing Center since that winter day. A near-term bookend – for there are many more accolades in his future – was shaking his hand in San Diego 1,183 days later on February 8, 2025, after he was presented US Sailing’s Outstanding Program Director of the Year Award. Khari won in 2025, but Community Sailing New Orleans and community sailing in the US had long since won in 2021.”
Under Khari’s leadership, our sailing programs have flourished, providing transformative experiences for countless young sailors while promoting environmental stewardship and maritime education. His dedication to breaking down barriers in the sport and inspiring the next generation makes him truly deserving of this national recognition. Our entire Community Sailing Team and Board of Directors is incredibly proud of his achievements and this well-earned national recognition.
Reflecting on this honor, Khari shared:
“Years ago, a supervisor of mine met me at the start of the season and asked me if I was ‘ready to start my career in sailing’. Looking back, it’s incredible to see just how right he was. It truly is an honor to be recognized by US Sailing for this award. I look forward to continuing to deliver the best experience possible to our participants and community. Sailing is a fun sport, and sharing this love of sailing is just as fun. “
Please join us in congratulating Khari on this well-earned honor!
